Applied to Math!

In 1971, Richard Skemp published "The Psychology of Learning Mathematics," in which he argued that learning mathematical concepts solely through definitions does not ensure true understanding. He emphasized that developing mathematical schemas starts with concrete operations.

A schema is a mental framework that enables "top-down" processing. Without it, individuals may find themselves trapped in "bottom-up" decoding, akin to the exhausting task of attempting to create a map while already lost in the woods.

These books use this principle by setting out concrete operations that can build a foundation for abstraction to higher level concepts.
